“Cheaper, Better, Faster” Black Hole Opens up Gravity Research to Everyone “We show the calculations comparing our results with the Schwarzschild metric (in our paper),” Rietman told The Debrief. “This discovery provides a novel method to gain insight into the physics of black holes, all within the safety of a laboratory,” the team explained.Īlso significant, the team says that their measurements of the degree to which bent light the artificial black hole bent light jibe perfectly with the real thing. In other words, sound waves were focused into a thick fluid, causing light to bend around like they were close to a black hole. “The acoustic waves alter the medium through which they travel, deflecting laser light in the lab similarly to how the gravitational pull of black holes bends the light of distant stars behind them.” “The team induced a black hole by modulating acoustic waves in a dense fluid, building on recent research that explores the use of high-frequency acoustic waves for analog simulations of gravity and general relativity in the laboratory,” the Applied Physics team told The Debrief. Once the waves were tuned correctly, Rietman and Melcher employed a Thorlabs FS30SMA-1550 fiber collimator to send the light into a Thorlabs CSS 100 series spectrometer, which confirmed the bending of light, exactly like a real black hole in space. Next, the researchers bombarded the dielectric medium with targeted sound waves. “It has the nice property of being optically transparent and dense, and its normal refractive index is 1.4768.” “The dielectric medium used was glycerin,” explained Rietman in an exclusive email to The Debrief. Brandon Melcher, filled a chamber with an everyday, non-toxic liquid. To create their simulated black hole, the paper’s lead author, Dr. Sound Waves and Glycerin Proved to be the Key Ingredients Their findings, published in the peer-reviewed journal Universe, are setting the pace for a small but growing community of researchers hoping to explore the mechanics of gravity and bring about humanity’s first real warp-drive spacecraft. Now, the group says their peers working in the field warp field mechanics have a tool that didn’t exist previously or was simply too expensive and impractical to utilize. Manfred Paulini, the Associate Dean of Physics at Carnegie Mellon University. New York-based Applied Physics first achieved recognition with the 2021 publication of a peer-reviewed theoretical paper detailing the mathematics behind the construction of a physical warp drive. More recently, the organization published a method for using Cal Tech’s Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory ( LIGO) to detect the use of warp drives in outer space, co-authored by Dr. The researchers say their discovery is significantly more cost-effective and efficient than current methods in use by researchers who want to simulate the effects of a black hole in a laboratory environment. research scientists from around the world. An artificial black hole produced using sound waves and a dielectric medium has been created in the lab, according to researchers with an international think tank featuring more than 30 Ph.D.

Results suggest that the Corsi backward task is not the spatial analogue of the Digit backward task and that it involves specific spatial processes. In fact, results revealed a significant impairment in the backward version of the Corsi test in the VSLD group, but not in the forward version, and in the Digit Span tasks. However, for the Corsi task, this difference was present only for VSLD children. The comparison between the forward and backward span versions showed that both visuospatial learning disabled children (VSLD) and controls presented with the Digit Span had a lower performance with the backward version. In Study 1, participants were administered a verbal span test (Digit Span test) and a visuospatial span test (Corsi Blocks task) both in the forward and backward versions, while in Study 2 only the Corsi test was administered. This research tested the hypotheses that the backward spatial span does not involve the controlled use of the same type of sequential spatial processing involved in the forward version, that its impairment is modality specific, and that children with specific visuospatial learning disabilities (VSLD) have lower performance in backward than in forward Corsi Blocks test, compared to a control group. For example, it has been argued that (in its comparison with the forward version) it has the same implications as the backward digit span and/or it requires the use of amodal central executive components of working memory. If your OS is Snow Leopard or higher, installing VLC is definitely a good choice especially if you only plan on watching AVI files on your computer.Ĭons of this AVI player (VLC media player):ġ. Unlike other media players which have limited format-support, you will be surprised that VLC can play a video or audio file that you didn't even know existed. The VLC media player, is an excellent open-source media player that is known for supporting a wide range of audio and video files. Solution 3: Play AVI with a AVI player Mac For a Mac running Lion or Mountain Lion, converting AVI video to QuickTime is highly recommended. Before installing Perian, you need to remove all QuickTime Components installed on your Mac, like FFusion, Xvid Delegate, 3ivX, DivX, DivX Decoder, XviD, msmpeg4v1, msmpeg4v2, AviImporter, EX_M4S2, Casio AVI Importer, AC3 Codec, and MatroskaQT.Ĥ. The version of 1.2.3 of Perian does not support QuickTime 10 in Lion and fails to fix the loss of audio after one second in xvid files with ac3.ģ. With a Mac running Mac OS X 10.7, say, Lion, you have to downgrade to the previous version, say 1.2.2. It also doesn't work on Mac OS X Mountain Lion.Ģ. The latest version 1.2.3 of Perian doesn't work on Mac OS X Mavericks, let alone Yosemite and Mac 10.11 EI Capitan because Perian requires installation of quicktime 7, which doesn't exist for Mavericks and above. What you need to know before downloading Perian:ġ. If you have QuickTime 7, you may be glad to discover that it can actually play AVI files without needing any additional plug-ins and codecs. If you want to use QuickTime as your main video player, you may choose to download Perian because it provides the necessary codecs or components that will allow you to play AVI on Mac. Perian, is a great open-source QuickTime component that allows playback of different video formats that cannot be played natively on your Mac computer. Blue whale calves are already amongst the world’s largest creatures when they are born, weighing up to 2,700kgs and are nearly eight meters long. Male and female blue whales tend to mate during the winter months, the babies are born a year later. They migrate to the Poles for the summer months to feed, returning to the calm warmer seas near the Equator for the winter. Despite their size, their body is relatively slim and streamlined for efficient long distance travel.īlue whales travel alone or in small groups, but have also been found in much larger pods of up to sixty individuals, particularly during periods of feeding. With only 10,000-25,000 left in the wild, these magnificence marine mammals are today classified as an endangered species. And despite a global hunting ban in 1966, their population has declined by 70-90 percent in the past 150 years. They then travel to warmer, tropical waters to mate and give birth.ĩ) At birth, blue whale calves measure around 8m long and weigh a massive 4,000kg! They grow quickly, too – for seven to eight months, these bulky babies suckle on their mother’s rich, fatty milk, and gain around 90kg each day!ġ0) Sadly, in the late 19th early 20th century, blue whales were heavily hunted. During the feeding season, they fill up on krill in cold polar waters. Their calls are the loudest of any creature on the planet, in fact, and can be heard underwater for hundreds of kilometres.Ĩ) These awesome aquatic animals follow a seasonal migration pattern. Gulp!ħ) To communicate with each other, blue whales make a series of super-loud vocal sounds. It then pushes the water through its 300-400 baleen plates, which trap the tasty grub to be swallowed. When eating, the whale lets a huge volume of water and krill into its mouth. Instead of teeth, they have baleen, a fibrous material used to filter their food. But they shift a fair few of these seafood snacks – up to 40 million each day, in fact!Ħ) These marine marvels are a species of ‘ baleen’ whale. But in areas where there’s lots of food available, as many as 60 whales may come together.ĥ) Despite their humongous size, blue whales eat tiny shrimp-like crustaceans called krill. Some individuals have a yellowy-coloured underside, giving rise to the nickname ‘ sulphur bottom’ whales.Ĥ) Blue whales can be found in all of our planet’s oceans, except the Arctic, usually swimming alone or in groups of two to four. It’s tongue weighs as much as an elephant, its heart is the size of a car and its blood vessels are so wide you could swim through them!ģ) These blue-grey giants have a long, stream-lined body, a wide head, huge flippers, a powerful tail and a small dorsal fin. And by ‘big’, we in fact mean absolutely ginormous!ġ) The largest animals to have ever lived on Earth, blue whales can grow to over 30m long and weigh more than 130,000kg – that’s longer than three buses and heavier than three lorries!Ģ) Pretty much everything about the blue whale is massive. Brace yourselves for a big ocean adventure, gang, with our brilliant blue whale facts. This console generation may be swiftly coming to an end, but this may indicate that features of this sort will be available on day one when the PS5 drops next December. With Apple Arcade, Xbox Game Pass, and Google Stadia all making moves, gaming is once again shifting away from the television, and Sony is smart to make an attempt to capitalize on this trend. That said, it’s nice to see Sony finally give up on the remote play first-party hostage situation they’ve kept up for most of the generation. Though it’s not necessarily a dealbreaker, it could significantly hinder the overall experience. Hilariously, the PlayStation remote play app allows for a vertical orientation reminiscent of the original GameBoy, and, while doing this de-clutters the screen, it squishes the gameplay into a little box at the top of the screen and makes anything more complex than a walking simulator borderline unplayable-assuming you don’t have some sort of massive phablet at your disposal.Īnother kicker is that your phone needs to be running either Android 10 or iOS 13 to be able to wirelessly connect a DS4 controller, which isn’t compatible with all devices. What’s more, players are more or less restricted to just their thumbs when gaming on mobile displays, meaning that using the shoulder buttons is an exercise in futility. Titles like God of War or Grand Theft Auto V certainly weren’t developed with mobile controls in mind, and cramming a bunch of virtual buttons on a single touch screen makes for some very uncomfortable gameplay. Remote Play is a feature of Sony video game consoles that allows the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 to transmit its video and audio output. Of course, this does come with a bit of a caveat while everything is technically playable on your phone, the touchscreen controls definitely aren’t ideal for playing anything remotely complex. Confirm that you have enabled Remote Play on your console. Confirm and Continue Tap on Confirm and Continue, then select PS4 or PS5, depending on the console to connect with. Fire up the PS Remote Play app After installing the app, launch it and click on Sign in to PSN. RELATED: Why Won't They Show Us Last Of Us Part 2 Gameplay? Go to App Store on your smartphone and install PS Remote Play. It’s a major leap forward for on-the-go gaming and seemingly another nail in the coffin for the out-of-date Vita and 3DS. The most interesting part of this whole affair is that PlayStation’s remote play isn’t reliant on both the console and phone being on the same network, and, so long as you have access to a stable connection, you can theoretically play PS4 games just about anywhere. When Alsoft announced a newly minted DiskWarrior 5.0 a few weeks ago, I was pleased. As such, an entire generation of modern Mac users may not even be aware that a powerful program like DiskWarrior even exists. Despite its age, DiskWarrior 4 still works with modern Macs, as long as you either have a DVD drive attached to your Mac (to load the program from disc) or you have DiskWarrior installed on a separate bootable hard drive. (Typing that last sentence makes me feel even older.) Long time Mac users will note that DiskWarrior is 30 years old, shipping shortly after the first Macs were released.Ĭomparing its lengthy history with present day computing, the previous version of DiskWarrior feels like a relic from a bygone era. To put some perspective: DiskWarrior 4.0 is so old it actually shipped on a CD. The venerable Mac disk repair utility had its last major update (version 4.0) nearly 8 years ago, when it was re-engineered to work with Intel-based Macs. Alsoft’s DiskWarrior was getting so long in the tooth, I thought the program had been quietly put out to pasture. |
